Sally Harrell is a metalsmith, jewelry designer, and dog lover from Charlotte, North Carolina. Her interest in metalwork began at an early age with the innate desire to create. Throughout her childhood, Sally remembers always participating in art classes, as well as creating jewelry on her own. Sally also had developed a strong passion for animals, specifically dogs. Growing up, she had always had a family dog and even raised a litter of puppies. Sally remembers always thinking that her love of dogs would somehow play a role in her professional life.
Sally always considered her jewelry creations as a hobby, as she continued her love of art by pursuing a degree in art history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1998. Being an art history major, Sally had the opportunity to study amazing works of art and architecture. In the spring semester of her junior year, she studied in Florence, Italy. This experience provided an opportunity for her to travel throughout Italy and Western Europe, where she was able to engross herself in the art and architecture, while simultaneously interacting with many unfamiliar cultures. Sally states that these travels have played a major role in her future by providing her with a global knowledge not only of art, but also of life.
With a desire to learn more about forms and structures, she entered the architecture program at the Savannah College of Art and Design in the summer of 2002, bringing along with her a new companion, Jackson, a 3-month old black Labrador puppy. After a semester of classes, Sally felt something wasnt right. Her desire to learn and create was still in tact, but her passion wasnt in architecture. Therefore, feeling that she was at the right school, but just in the wrong field of study, she followed her intuition and curiosity and took a metals and jewelry class. She had found her niche. For the next three years, Sally pursued the metals and jewelry program at Savannah College of Art and Design. The school allowed her to be immersed in an atmosphere of creativity within various art disciplines that intertwine and connect at various levels. This contact with all art forms has influenced Sallys jewelry designs, pushing her creations to include alternative materials and methods.
Her dog Jackson was soon accompanied by a mix breed puppy named Bear in 2003. Bear was found on the streets in Savannah and taken in temporarily by Sally. Temporary quickly became permanent as Bear got into Sallys heart and a bond was formed.
As Sallys jewelry creations advanced, so did her love of her dogs. She found herself spending hours making tags for her dogs and any other dog she knew. Her process was vamped and revamped as she learned new skills from school until she was satisfied with the final form. Knowing that she had a marketable product on her hands, Sallys business, Sally Harrell, began in the fall of 2005. She had finally found a way to combine her two passions, art and dogs, into a career.
